About Me

My photo
Hi, welcome to my portfolio. I am a fourth grade teacher at Linda Rankin Givens Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have obtained both my Bachelors and Masters degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). My Bachelors degree is in Elementary Education and my Masters degree is in Elementary Education:Curriculum and Instruction with Emphasis on Educational Technology. I hope you enjoy taking a look at my classroom activities. You are welcome to incorporate them into your own plans.

Bud, Not Buddy

In the book, Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis, Bud carries with him a suitcase of items that are sentimental to him.

F.O.S.S. Science

As part of the Science curriculum at our school, we use a program called F.O.S.S. (Full Option Science System) which correlates with our Science text.  This particular unit of study is on Water.  The investigation for the students was to invent and create a working waterwheel based on the materials provided.  By "working" it had to be able to lift objects.  Of course the kids had so much fun creating their designs and constructing their waterwheels! Take a look...

The Tale of Despereaux

The students read The Tale of Despereaux as a whole group.  Upon completion of the book, the class was given an assignment to create a mobile.
Instead of the usual "coat hanger" type mobile, students were asked to search the outdoors, ie a park, their backyard, for 3 tree branches.  They were also told to ask their parents for a thread spool.  Then with string they constructed their mobile.

Clark County Heritage Museum

In March the class and I went on a field trip to the Clark County Heritage Museum. The Museum is located in Henderson, near College and Boulder Highway. It was quite the bus trip since we were traveling from the Northwest area of Las Vegas. But the students were prepared in advanced it was going to be at least a 45 minute ride, however I did hear a few "Are we there yet?" prior to arrival.

As for the Museum, it's one of the best 4th grade field trips in the Las Vegas area.
